Which of these two belief systems do you tend to operate from? Growth Mindset or Fixed Mindset?
Your answer matters because it affects the extent to which you persevere with new challenges and give yourself opportunities to develop.
Carol Dweck, the Stanford psychologist who coined the term Growth Mindset, explains that people with a growth mindset are great at encouraging themselves when their initial efforts don’t meet with success. They value self-development and aren’t afraid of failure. This frees them up to take risks, stretch themselves and learn from their mistakes.
In contrast, people with a Fixed Mindset see their abilities as being fairly static. Because of this, they focus less on IMPROVING and more on PROVING their talents. They tend to stay in their comfort zones and avoid useful negative feedback, thereby depriving themselves of chances to develop.
The good news is that if you have more of a Fixed Mindset, you’re not fixed with it! You can grow your Growth Mindset. One great way to do this is to latch onto quotes that remind you of the attitude you want to nurture.
